Cornwall is renowned for its artistic heritage and has been the inspiration for numerous artists for nearly 200 years. We are delighted to have on display, and for sale, the works of three artists – two home grown and one from Belgium.
The three dimensional torso forms featured in our restaurant, bar and entrance hall are the work of local artist Adela Powell whose work “is evocative of natural and man made objects, looking for a hidden beauty revealed by erosion”.
Courtesy of the John Southern Gallery, the work of Lancashire born Steven Townsend is displayed on the Hotel’s main staircase. A self taught artist of exceptional talent, he was voted artist of the Year in 1999
.
Also with special thanks to John Southern, our dining room features the work of Belgium born Carl Brenders, internationally acclaimed as one of the premier, if not the finest, painters of wildlife of all time. A dedicated conservationist, he hopes that his paintings will “create awareness that the protection of wildlife and wild places is worth the effort”.
Original torso sculptures by Mrs Powell together with pictures and fine quality limited edition prints by Messrs. Brenders and Townsend are available for sale subject to availability. Please contact the Hotels owners for full details and prices.
There is nothing to beat the taste of fresh ingredients, which is why Cornwall's fishing and farming heritage is such a gastronomic playground for our chefs.Read more

Discover that sense of ‘Well House-being’
Some find it at sea. Others on a desert island, along with the coconuts. Closer to home you can discover it deep in the folds of the beautiful Looe Valley in South East Cornwall, at The Well House Country House
Hotel and Restaurant.
What is it? Well, it’s an almost transcendental tranquillity, a delicious inner
calm that really makes the world go away. We call it ‘Well House-being’, you’ll call it a godsend.
Our privately owned, award-winning luxury country manor house, with 9 superbly appointed bedrooms, is in another world - with no room numbers on the doors, no racks of tourist leaflets in the hall and no plastic credit card signs on reception.
If you are seeking countryside tranquillity, as opposed to the drama of the coast, we boast four acres of picture book Cornish gardens with ponds and a gentle stream fed by the Holy Well of St Keyne as it winds its way into the valley. For the more energetic, there’s also a 'club' size all-weather tennis court, heated swimming pool and croquet lawns. In fact everything to add to your ‘away from it all’ holiday experience.
It’s no wonder we’re one of the highest rated luxury hotels in Cornwall and a recent Good Hotel Guide César winner.
We are the only non-coastal hotel in the whole of Cornwall whose restaurant has been awarded 3 - AA Rosettes for culinary excellence. We have twice been voted the Good Food Guide’s 'County Restaurant of the Year' and in The Good Food Guide 2008 we are proclaimed as one of the seven 'Best for Breakfast' in the UK.
Our talented brigade of chefs, under Master Chef, Tom Hunter, create modern European menus, which change with the seasons, taking full advantage of the fresh Cornish harvest from both land and sea and home grown produce from our own orchard,
vegetable and herb gardens.
You’ll find The Well House is quietly tucked away, just off the beaten tourist track, yet not far from the picturesque fishing ports of Looe, Polperro and Fowey. We’re situated in the Gateway to Cornwall, which means we are also within easy driving distance of the famous Eden Project, stunning coastal walks and beaches, beautiful stately homes and the extraordinary Lost Gardens of Heligan along with some 69 others!.
Alternatively, lose the car keys and yourself in Cornwall’s answer to Nirvana…
